Flower girls may be tiny but their role on the big day is huge. With so many different adorable styles to choose from, picking the perfect flower girl dress has become one of the most enjoyable parts of the wedding planning process.
From florals to tutus and all the accessories in between, here at The Scottish Wedding Show, we have compiled five of our absolute favourite tips and picks of gorgeous wedding inspiration for you and the little ladies in your life.
- It’s all about the hair
Flower crowns, bows and headbands are popular at the moment and it’s an accessory look we adore and they’re a great way of tying in your wedding flowers. Adding lots of green foliage such as eucalyptus or ivy looks stunning set against any hair colour - giving a lovely, boho feel.
Our advice would be to stick to relaxed, natural hairstyles. There’s no point slicking back or forcing hair into a heavily-styled look for it to unravel into chaos as the day goes on.
- Comfort is key
Our little helpers should be comfortable all day long so that means avoid any restrictive, heavy or itchy fabrics. Soaking up the atmosphere, running wild and dancing are the best parts of any wedding when we’re tiny, so pick pieces that are easy to move and have fun in. Short, full-bodied skirts like tutus look so sweet and allow lots of movement, yet eliminate the chance of any rips, trips or trailing.
If you are planning ahead and ordering the perfect flower girl dress, remember that little ones grow much, much faster than us. If your wedding is in six or 12 months-time, take this time period into account when thinking about size and fit.
- Don’t be afraid to go different
For a long while, flower girl dresses would often mimic or be an extension of the bride’s look with white and ivory traditional gowns dominating the market. Having a mini-bridal dress is a lovely idea and still popular, but times are changing and no longer are such styles the go-to.
Just as bridesmaids can now opt for different styles, there’s no restrictions in what a flower girl should wear. Dusky pink, grey, and mint green are all popular colour choices at the moment as well as more informal fabrics and cuts, so don’t be afraid to think outside the box.
4. Let the little ones have their say
There’s nothing sweeter than when a flower girl’s personality shines through on the big day, so it’s a great idea to have a little creative input from them. Not only does this make the whole event more exciting for them but it also makes them feel included, which will probably mean they’re more engaged and (possibly!) on their best behaviour on the big day.
If you have more than one flower girl, having them dressed in the same outfit will make them feel connected, more confident and create a special, unique bond.
- Relax and enjoy
Don’t put too much pressure on your flower girls. It should be a fun and special day for them to remember and look back on fondly. We all know how stressful planning the big day can be, and wedding morning nerves are completely normal.
Try to remember that flower girls are only little children, so don’t take out any nerves on them. It’s likely they’ll forget to look at the right camera, to smile down the aisle and they’ll spill juice on their lovely dress by the end of the night - but that’s part of the charm, so don’t take their responsibilities too seriously.
